From this point on, Amadou was heavily influenced by James Brown and Jimi Hendrix, and he confesses that he tried emulating Hendrix’s trick of playing guitar with his teeth. When he and Mariam performed in the institute’s own band, they even played Pink Floyd songs.

It’s unlikely — though just about possible — that the young couple dreamt that, one day, they might support Pink Floyd. They certainly can’t have thought that, one day, Pink Floyd’s guitarist, David Gilmour, would play in their band, but last year, at the Union Chapel, in north London, Gilmour joined the couple on stage, playing second guitar through their set and even on one of his own songs, There’s No Way out of Here, with Amadou & Mariam sharing lead vocals.

“It was unimaginable. To have the chance to meet him and to play with him was a dream,” says Amadou, who adds that the collaboration was much more impromptu than originally planned. “We were supposed to meet him the day before to rehearse, but there were some visa issues and we were a day later than we expected. In fact, we basically jumped out of Eurostar and onto the stage. But it went okay.”
