Tom Stoppard schrieb Hörspiel basierend auf The Dark Side of the Moon

Sir Tom Stoppard: “When Dark Side was a new album in 1973, a friend of mine walked into my room where I was working with a copy in his hand and said ‘you really have to do a play about this album. So, when, roughly thirty nine and a half years later, somebody from Radio 2 asked me if I’d like to do some kind of play around the 40th birthday of the Pink Floyd album, it really wasn’t a very difficult decision. It became an important record for so many people. It was an important record for me.”

Gegenüber BBC Radio 4 ergänzte er noch: “I used a lot of the album, well all of it other than the lyrics, as a kind of underscore. I was picking up emotional cues from the music. I called David Gilmour and asked: ‘Do you mind if I write dialogue on top of your instrumental pieces?’, and he said ,’Of course not’.”

David Gilmour, der Stoppards Skript gelesen hatte, meinte: “I have read the script of Tom’s radio play and found it fascinating. I can’t wait to hear it come to life with the great cast performing it and our music woven into it. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate The Dark Side of the Moon’s 40-year anniversary.”

“Important clarification: we’ve just noticed that some of the BBC’s advertising images and teasers have quoted 28.08.2013 as the date of broadcast for Darkside. This should of course read 26.08.2013, which is Monday – the evening of the broadcast.”
