Rockfour*AnovA Productions / Tel Aviv For many years we covered Astronomy Domine live (now playing on myspace/rockfour). Interstellar Overdrive, See Emily Play, Matilda Mother, Lucifer Sam and Arnold Layne naturally followed. Especially for this competition we went into our studio in Tel Aviv to tryout new interpretations of the competing song. We used 1/2" tape 8 track machine and recorded most of the song live. 14.11.2006: Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and David Bowie are set to release a new version of Arnold Layne on Christmas Day. The track was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in May when Bowie joined Gilmour onstage. Originally released on March 1967 as Pink Floyd’s debut single, Arnold Layne also announced the talents of the band’s mercurial frontman Syd Barrett who tragically passed away in July. As a result the duo’s collaboration on the track dedicated to Floyd’s fallen genius.

“Syd was a major inspiration for me,” he stated Bowie following Barret’s death. “The few times I saw him perform in London at UFO and the Marquee clubs during the sixties will forever be etched in my mind. He was so charismatic and such a startlingly original songwriter. Also, along with Anthony Newley, he was the first guy I'd heard to sing pop or rock with a British accent. His impact on my thinking was enormous. A major regret is that I never got to know him. A diamond indeed.”

This new version of Arnold Layne will be available as part of a three track EP which will include Floyd’s Rick Wright on a second version of the track and Gilmour also running through Barrett’s classic Dark Globe which originally appeared on his 1970 solo debut The Madcap Laughs. All tracks will be made available as downloads from Christmas Day for a limited period of time, and as a limited edition 7-inch single in Europe and a 10-inch in the US from Boxing Day onwards. The tracks will also appear on Gilmour’s forthcoming live DVD, David Gilmour Live At The Albert Hall, which is expected in March and which celebrates the success of the latter’s On An Island tour earlier in the year.
